New Sonic and the Black Knight screenshots

I still haven’t fully wrapped my head around the thought of a Sonic game where the iconic blue hedgehog wields Excalibur Calibur, but hey, whatever Sega. As long as it’s good.

Anyway, Sega’s released a bunch of new screenshots from Sonic and the Black Knight, a Wii-exclusive title where Sonic is thrust into the Arthurian legends. The game will feature a sword-fighting system using the Wii’s motion-sensing Wiimote.

Screenshots are below, and they certainly do look pretty. Sonic and the Black Knight is slated for a Spring 2009 release in Japan. North America is slated to get the game on March 2009.

Neuros OSD contest winner announcement!

thumb - Image 1First things first though, a couple of public service announcements from the dude’s who made this whole thing possible, Neuros, fear not, it’s pretty cool stuff.

You see, Neuros is about to release a new Beta firmware for the OSD, with 2 new applications developed by Neuros Hacker MattJ: Stream Fuse and Wooble.

Stream Fuse will allow Neuros OSD users to stream live TV remotely. The stream can be played on a PC with VLC or Mplayer, and on smartphones using compatible streaming software that include TCPMP (the Core Pocket Media Player).

Wooble is a simple web interface to access and control the Neuros OSD remotely. Operations like scheduling new recordings or changing a video channel that used to require being in front of the Neuros OSD and the use of its remote can now be done from a simple webpage anywhere.

Tres cool non? Anyway, on to the announcement.

And the winner is….

Wii Homebrew - Eject DVD v0.1

Wii Eject DVD brew - Image 1 Here’s something very practical for you from hOTzENpLOTz: a disc ejector for the Wii’s DVD drive. It’s a really simple program, as you may have gleaned from the product description now, but it’s still nifty, eh?

We’ve got the download link right here; just make sure you take caution when installing this program on your unit.

GameStop: Games’ digital distribution not a threat

GameStop - Image 1 A lot of people are predicting a rather doomsday-ish scenario for the plight of the retail industry in the rise of the DL format. While many are saying that game disks will eventually bow down to their downloadable counterparts, GameStop is keeping calm, and is, in fact, of the belief that the DL format is no threat to retail business such as theirs.

Says Tony Bartel, VP for GameStop,

Actually we really don’t see it as a threat. When you talk about a threat, we actually see a couple of things. First of all, when you look at the digital download space, 95 percent of the games taht are downloaded today are on the PC side, the majority of which are casual. About 2 percent of the entire console market is downloaded today, and that’s a growing rate that’s slightly less than the actual boxed product on video games. So the console market really today consists of what we call microtransactions, where you add the extra maps, where you add the extra pieces. So there’s very little of the full game downloaded that is actually taking place on the console side.

And according to him, what’s gonna keep them afloat and distinct from these downloadables are the manpower they have in the store. Yes, it’s thanks to their helpful staff that the convenience of DL games will be no match to retail ones.

What we see is that the games are incredibly complex, and with the complexity - and espe

cially with the investment that they actually have as well both in terms of time and money - we actually see that there is an increased need for someone to explain the game.

What do you guys think? Will it be any time soon that you prefer to get your games online, or do you think dragging yourself away from the computer for a good ol’ walk under the sun to GameStop is still a huge hit?
