Iwata Live Blog - Image 1

The latest out of GDC is from none other than Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who has no need for humility as he announces that the Wii is the fastest-selling game console in history, having officially shipped 50 million consoles worldwide.

But who cares about that. Old news. Moving on. You’ll care more about the new Zelda game that was announced, as well as the firmware update that they issued as an answer to the Wii storage problem.

The new Zelda game is coming to the Nintendo DS later this year, and is titled The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Reports say that its visual style is similar to The Phantom Hourglass. A trailer was shown during the event but we don’t have an embeddable version out yet… so just use your imaginations?

As for the Wii storage solution, Nintendo will be issuing Wii Menu 4.0, which will feature the SD Card Menu. This will lift the 2 GB mem card cap and will allow higher capacity cards. Games can be downloaded and launched straight from the SD card without going through the Wii System Memory. The update will be available today. Finally, eh?

That’s it. Toodles.

Rumor - Netflix coming to PS3 and Wii - Image 1

The Xbox 360’s been enjoying Netflix for some time now, and it’s always been hoped that the service will eventually come to the PlayStation 3 too. Now the rumor mill is churning out new info that this might happen after all. Not only that, it might even come to the Wii as well.

Rumors that it will come to the Wii and the PS3 started when new surveys from Netflix started making the rounds. The surveys asked customers whether they want to see the service become available for the platforms. The survey describes the Netflix service for both platforms to require a “Netflix Instant Streaming Disc” worth US 9.99.

A separate disc to support the service would make sense since Sony might be hesitant to give first-party support to the service with a firmware update, considering they have their own video service, and Nintendo’s much too involved with first-party services to offer their own support.

Early April Fool’s prank, or do we actually have something to look forward to here?

Resident Evil 5 - Image 1

“Chris, I said re-boot. As in boot with a T. BOOT.”

Considering that Capcom producer Jun Takeuchi previously said that the next installment in the Resident Evil franchise would be a reboot, having an RE6 released in four or five years may not be so surprising. To have it released in eight years, however, may raise some eyebrows though.

In an interview with the Gadget Show (see Via link below for video), Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata honestly stated that the next installment for RE may be quite a ways off.

We haven’t decided whether we’re going to make Resident Evil 6 yet. But if we do, it could take anywhere up to eight years, but hopefully only four.

See, with a franchise reboot, they’d have to rework the gameplay system, the story, the characters, and lots of entire elements in their formula. For all intents and purposes, it’s almost as if reboots are done by building from the ground up all over again, depending on how far you define “reboot” as.

So for now, it looks like we should enjoy the latest RE game (or previous others too) for all that it’s worth - it’s going to be a looong wait for the next one.

I wonder what kind of story the reboot will have though. Maybe they’ll follow the one set in the Milla Jovovich movies? Hmm… Nah. Let’s just hope the world won’t end in 2012 before this baby comes out.

Wii Batch IOS Update Released, Do not update - Image 1If you value your Wiibrew, better no update to the latest issue from Nintendo just yet.

The latest update contains changes to various IOS versions, according to Wiibrew.org, and updating isn’t recommended at this point until more is known about it.

It won’t be surprising if the latest update really does have more homebrew blocks, as Nintendo has pulled off that kind of thing in past updates.

Here is a list of the updated IOS versions according to the Wiibrew Wiki:

  • IOS16
    • Likely added to thwart its use for piracy.
  • IOS38
    • Slightly updated version (one minor version number) of the title included with Animal Crossing: City Folk.
  • IOS60
    • High version number suggests this is the latest IOS currently available and will likely be used for the 3.5 System Menu update for Japan, US and European regions.
  • IOS61
    • Possible use as the new Shop Channel IOS.

More Wii homebrew:

Nintendo Italy has revealed their upcoming WIi game Punch Out!! will be featuring the Balance Board support. Seeing as how Punch Out!!! is an arcade boxing title originally from the NES and SNES, having this new peripheral should be interesting, to say the least.

A (Google) translation of the site’s statement says:

For owners of the Wii Balance Board (contained within the pack of Wii Fit) is also possible to use third control system, which lets you dodge the blows opponent realistically shifting the weight of his body once rose on the floor while you take shots of attack coupled with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

Footworks, basically. Lots of them. Of course, the Nunchuk and Wii Remote will also be handy to help you score those knock-out points. In the meantime, here are some screenshots.

Quick recap: AnyTitle Deleter DB lists all the titles that you can delete using Tona’s AnyTitle Deleter. It uses RedSquirrel’s AnyTitle Deleter MOD database format and adds in a feature that reads title names straight from banner.bin files.

Wii homebrew - Image 1

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get right to the update. MrClick has rolled out AnyTitleDeleter DB 1.0 v3 (yup, he’s still keeping the unconventional naming convention), which adds the following changes:

  • title names can now be read from 00000000.app files found in many (but not all) channels
  • the Wii is brought into “super user” mode when reading 00000000.app files
  • likewise “system menu” mode is used to read banner.bin files
  • updated the ES identification to the one from tona’s AnyRegion Changer
  • removed the “Directory” naming mode since it was buggy and quite useless
  • minor corrections in menu code
